João Biehl is Susan Dod Brown Professor and Chair of the Department of Anthropology at Princeton University, where he also directs the Brazil LAB. In his ethnographic work, Biehl explores how science and technology move from laboratories to markets, health policies, and unequal lifeworlds in the Global South. In his historical anthropological work, Biehl traces nature-based healing practices and the legacies of anti-colonial insurgencies in southern settler frontiers. He is the author of the award-winning books Vita: Life in a Zone of Social Abandonment and Will to Live: AIDS Therapies and the Politics of Survival. Recently, he coauthored Arc of Interference: Medical Anthropology for Worlds on Edge and Unfinished: The Anthropology of Becoming. He is also the coeditor of the book series Critical Global Health at Duke University Press. A passionate educator, Biehl has received Princeton’s Presidential Distinguished Teaching Award and the Graduate Mentoring Award.

Em seu trabalho etnográfico, Biehl investiga como a ciência e a tecnologia se deslocam dos laboratórios para os mercados, políticas de saúde e mundos de vida marcados por desigualdade no Sul Global. No seu trabalho histórico, ele se volta às práticas de cura e cuidado baseadas na natureza e os legados de insurgências anticoloniais nas fronteiras sulinas.
