Brazil LAB and MapBiomas Unveil AI-Driven Socio-Environmental Literature Project
The Brazil LAB is leading an innovative project to deepen knowledge of socio-environmental representations in Brazilian literature and enhance understanding of ecological transformations in the country.
The MapBiomas Literature project applies artificial intelligence to analyze hundreds of Brazilian novels, poems, and short stories, integrating representations of socio-environmental changes into MapBiomas platforms. The initiative is developed in partnership with MapBiomas, a collaborative network that maps and monitors land cover and land use, and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.
Literature, as a repository of human experiences and subjectivities, holds immense potential for research and documentation. Beyond offering insights into individuals’ and environments’ experiences, literary works can also be examined in relation to the environment, geography, history, society, and diverse ways of perceiving and inhabiting the world.
The project’s initial findings will be released in June 2025.
