Associate Research Scholar Miqueias Mugge Engages Audiences at São Leopoldo Book Fair Opening Event
The Brazil LAB sponsored book Lost Writings: Life and Work of an Insurgent Immigrant was the centerpiece of a recent public humanities event in southern Brazil. In early August, Miqueias Mugge, the book’s co-author (with João Biehl) and Associate Research Scholar at PIIRS, was a keynote speaker at São Leopoldo’s annual book fair. Mugge’s earlier co-authored book (with Paulo Moreira) on the place of slavery in the region’s German colonies in the 19th century was also discussed by local historians and teachers.
Both Lost Writings: Life and Work of an Insurgent Immigrant and Histories of Slave Owners and Enslaved Workers in an European Immigration Region have been distributed to all public schools in the city and will be integrated into the history curriculum. The Brazil LAB is proud to support this initiative that bridges the gap between academic research and elementary public education at the moment in which the region reckons with the bicentennial of German immigration to Brazil.
